For the first time in its history, Best Best & Krieger LLP is one of the nation’s 200 largest law firms — ranking No. 199 in the National Law Journal 500 list for 2021.

In addition, BB&K ranked No. 13 on the NLJ’s annual Women in Law Scorecard. This is a consistent high mark for the firm, with a bump up one slot from last year and the same No. 13 ranking in 2019.

“That BB&K is increasing its number of attorneys while maintaining its high percentage of female attorneys is a testament to our efforts to ensure equality and diversity,” said Managing Partner Eric Garner. “Likewise, our becoming one of the 200 largest law firms in the country reflects our strategy in recent years to grow in response to client demand. Five years ago, we ranked No. 251. Clearly, our clients have legal needs they are relying on BB&K to meet.”

Chief Talent Office Danielle Sakai added: “Participating in surveys like this are important for us to measure where are, where we are going and how we match up against others in the industry. Ranking high on the Women in Law Scorecard, as we have consistently done, shows that our hard work is paying off, yet also ensures we remain accountable.”

Both rankings are generated from data law firms submit to American Lawyer Media, which owns the NLJ and other law publications. BB&K reported 204 full-time equivalent attorneys, with women accounting for more than 42 percent of the total.

Last month, ALM published its annual Diversity Scorecard, which ranked BB&K No. 12 in the U.S. BB&K was also ranked No. 6 for Highest Percentage of Minority Equity Partners and No. 7 for Highest Percentage of Hispanic Attorneys. While BB&K has always received high marks for diversity, the firm recognizes that more can always be done. To that end, the firm formed a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee last year.

The NLJ reported that this was the first year since the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis that the number of attorneys at large U.S. law firms decreased — but it was only by 0.1 percent. Given the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, some decrease was not surprising and the fallout could have been worse, legal industry experts told the NLJ.
