CA State Bar Learns From Thomas Girardi and Other Failures, Commits to Reforms and Better Policing of Its Own Members
On March 22, 2023, Best Best & Krieger LLP Partner Ruben Duran was published in ALM’s The Recorder, in which he and CA State Bar Executive Director Leah Wilson discuss the changes being made at the Bar regarding the policing of its own members.
In his opinion piece, Duran, who focuses his practice on municipal law and government policy, outlined the public efforts to address questions raised about the Bar’s acknowledged failure to discipline disgraced attorney Thomas Girardi, failures outlined in the independent report the Bar commissioned from outside attorney Aaron May.
Duran notes, “The goal of these reforms is to increase public trust and confidence in the State Bar and in the attorneys who are so central to protecting and enforcing rights in our society. Even a small number of unethical attorneys undermines the confidence all of us must have for the practice of law to fulfill its vital function.”
