Best Best & Krieger LLP (BBK) is proud to share that attorney Stephanie Véniez has been honored by Inland Counties Legal Services (ICLS) with the 2026 Volunteer of the Year award. Véniez was presented with the award at the annual Advocates for Justice Celebration. The award reflects Véniez’s dedication to volunteering with ICLS and her work with the Guardianship Program.

Véniez got involved with ICLS when she was looking for opportunities to offer legal services to those facing immediate and personal needs. “I love representing public agencies because their work supports community growth but I also wanted to stay connected to the concrete impact legal advocacy can have on one person’s life,” said Véniez.

When Véniez began volunteering, she focused on identifying and resolving the legal issue at hand. Over time, she has shifted this focus to first connect with the client’s needs and priorities, noting that “the strongest representation begins with listening and building a partnership around what the client actually hopes to achieve.”

One case that Véniez worked on through the Guardianship Program highlighted the importance of helping clients navigate difficult decisions when circumstances change. Véniez emphasized that through this case, she was able to see her client gain a clear understanding of the legal process and learn how to seek support moving forward. The experience reinforced that success is not always defined by achieving the original goal but also by empowering clients with the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about their future. ICLS has provided Véniez the opportunity and support to help make a meaningful difference in her clients’ lives.

At BBK, Véniez advises California public agencies, particularly school districts and educational institutions, on education law matters, including regulatory compliance, board governance, special education, disability access, labor and employment and day-to-day operations. Her practice focuses on providing practical, defensible guidance that helps districts meet legal obligations while supporting students and maintaining effective governance.

Stephanie Veniez Quote

"The most meaningful part of my volunteer work has been earning a client’s trust. People usually ask for legal help during uncertain or vulnerable times in their lives. Giving someone the space to feel heard can be just as important as the legal outcome itself. Legal knowledge matters, but advocacy is most valuable when it gives a client greater clarity, confidence and agency over the decisions affecting their life."
