Interim Deputy Director of PRA Services & E-Discovery Counsel
Maya Garza
Maya Garza is an attorney and Deputy Director of Best Best & Krieger LLP’s (BBK) Public Records Act (PRA) Services and E-Discovery Counsel. She advises municipal bodies, special districts, and local authorities across California responding to public records requests and subpoenas efficiently and lawfully. Maya also trains agency staff to build self-sufficient, legally compliant PRA processes and comprehensive records management systems when desired.
With extensive experience in records law, Maya provides straightforward, actionable advice on when to release or withhold information, helping agencies navigate regulatory responsibilities while balancing privacy concerns. Previously, she was involved in litigating against government bodies to obtain records, an experience that deepened her understanding of both sides of public disclosure laws.
A passionate volunteer, Maya serves as General Counsel for the Aging People in Prison Human Rights Campaign, an advocacy group dedicated to securing the release of elderly incarcerated individuals, particularly Black men, through non-legal channels. Maya advises volunteers on mitigation best practices, including interviewing and records collection in support of Freedom Campaigns and early release options for elderly clients in multiple states based on various factors, including their medical conditions, length of their sentence, and the existence of any local prosecutor-led initiatives.
An amateur ballerina with years of intense training and wear, Maya now enjoys aerial dance and boxing, a sport she took up in law school as a stress reliever.
