Best Best & Krieger LLP has again earned a high position on The American Lawyer’s annual Diversity Scorecard. The firm was ranked No. 34 on the 2022 Diversity Scorecard, placing BBK in the top 15% for racial and ethnic diversity among U.S. law firms. The 2022 Scorecard, which is based on a 2021 survey of 221 law firms from across the nation, shows the greatest annual increase in the percentage of minority attorneys in the industry since 2001.

“BBK has expanded every aspect of its diversity efforts. One of the most notable strides is the structure we have put in place around our internal mentoring program. We have already seen the benefits from this recharged focus on mentorship, especially among our diverse and first generation attorneys and staff members,” said Chief Talent Officer Danielle Sakai. “We’re making great strides and we’re proud of our progress, both as a firm and as an industry, but we can do better. Every day we strive to do better.”

According to The American Lawyer, this year’s Diversity Scorecard was updated “to reflect the need for firms to be truly diverse rather than concentrate their DEI efforts on any one ethnic group.” The Scorecard was revamped to emphasize diversity across an organization’s entire complement of attorneys, with a focus on diversity in leadership roles. Participating law firms are ranked by a diversity score, which is determined using a series of metrics assessing their racial and ethnic diversity across three categories: firm leadership, equity partners and other attorneys.

BBK’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee provides open forums for support, connection and to address critical, timely issues. The DEI Committee, which is open to all BBK attorneys and staff, also spearheads regular firm programming and initiatives to ensure engagement and ongoing education at every level. The firm’s Community Outreach and Firm Culture DEI subcommittees help to guide and shape the firm’s external and internal DEI efforts.
