PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — Best Best & Krieger LLP is honored to be named City Attorney for the City of Palm Springs. With the City Council’s unanimous vote to adopt a legal services agreement on April 3, BB&K is looking forward to continuing to serve the government, citizens and businesses of Palm Springs.
The firm has provided back up legal services to the City for about a year. With so many critical issues and projects impacting the City, BB&K’s Municipal Law attorneys have provided guidance on planning, elections and other matters. Partner Jeffrey Ballinger, who serves as city attorney for the cities of San Juan Capistrano and Fontana and assistant city attorney for the City of Indian Wells, will serve as city attorney.
BB&K is known for its robust and preeminent public agency legal services. The firm was named a California Regional Powerhouse last year by the national legal newspaper Law360. The same publication recognized BB&K as the No. 1 Best Mid-Size Law Firm in the country for both Minority Attorneys and Women and Minorities generally. BB&K regularly receives high marks for diversity, including No. 4 in the nation for having the Highest Percentage of Hispanic Attorneys by American Lawyer Media and No. 34 on the National Law Journal’s LGBT Scorecard.
BB&K was founded in nearby Riverside nearly 130 years ago. In 1959, the firm opened its first desert office in Palm Springs and now has one in Indian Wells, along with eight other locations in the State. We count more than 100 California municipalities as clients and serve as city or town attorney to half of them. These include the cities of Palm Desert, Indian Wells and Coachella, making BB&K’s attorneys intimately familiar with the challenges and projects in the area. These include endangered species, water, renewable energy and other environmental issues, and transportation, telecommunications and infrastructure concerns.
The firm’s attorneys, paralegals, municipal analysts and prosecution counselors work collaboratively across practice areas to provide clients with a full range of services, from Public Records Act and open meeting laws oversight to labor and employment guidance to environmental law counsel. In recent years, BB&K’s Municipal Law practice has grown to meet the demands faced by cities and other public agencies — many of which Palm Springs is grappling with, along with its own unique and specific issues.
These include cannabis, short-term rentals and ethical transparency in government. While the City’s population may only be 48,000 people, it has many larger city functions and characteristics. With its own international airport and police department come potentially complex problems that BB&K is eager to help successfully navigate. This is an exciting time for the City. Always a cultural hub in the region, it is now experiencing a renaissance with music festivals, film festivals and an ongoing Downtown revitalization driving more people to the area.
BB&K is thrilled to serve the City and work in partnership with its officials and citizens. We welcome Palm Springs to the BB&K family!
