Best Best & Krieger LLP (BBK) Labor & Employment Partner Arlene Prater was recently recognized by San Diego’s Serving Seniors, a nonprofit committed to advocacy for the area’s low-income and unhoused seniors. Prater was presented with the 2024 Simon Silva Leadership Award during the organization’s 2024 “World Of Difference” volunteer recognition event in April. The award is named for Simon Silva, whose dedication to public service profoundly impacted Serving Seniors and the community.

Prater has been involved with Serving Seniors’ for nearly 30 years and is the organization’s longest-serving board member, with a tenure spanning nearly two decades. Silva’s widow, Claudia, presented the award to Prater noting, “Serving Seniors has had the good fortune of Arlene’s stellar leadership and as the longest-serving board member. Her expertise in employment law and her sage guidance has helped our team managing the changes and deploying best practices in a growing and diverse workforce.”

During her board tenure, Prater was integral to several milestone projects for Serving Seniors, including the development of the Potiker Family Senior Resident in City Heights (2007); the Gary and Mary West Senior Wellness Center (2010); the Schmale Family Senior Residence in Ramona (2019); the Harris Family Senior Residence in City Heights (2022); and the groundbreaking of the Clairemont Senior Residence and Wellness Center (2024). As a board member, Prater also helped the organization expand its services and outreach by growing its budget from $6 million to $14 million annually.
